Who Are We?

Mathema courses are taught by experienced, scholarship-winning Mathletes.

We are a group of high school students who wish to introduce students to competitive math and help them along their journey until they excel at it.

Ishani Tarkar is a junior at duPont Manual High School. In all 3 years of middle school, she participated in MathCounts Chapter, winning a full ride scholarship in 2020 by placing 3rd at State, which would have advanced her to nationals. In the same year, she scored a 23 on the AMC 8, placing her in the Distinguished Honor Roll. Additionally, in 7th grade, she got a 35 on the math portion of the ACT, and a 32 composite, qualifying her for the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search Grand Recognition Ceremony. Ishani has taken numerous advanced math courses AP Calculus AB in 9th and AP Calculus BC and AP Statistics 10th grade, earning 5s in all 3. She also qualified for the AIME as a sophomore. So far, Ishani has taken 9 AP exams, passed all of them, and will be taking 7 this year. As a freshman, she won first in her category at the Regional and State fairs and got second place Best of Fair for Life Sciences at State Science Fair, qualifying her for the 2021 ISEF. She has volunteered and taught at multiple academic summer camps throughout the past few years. In her free time, Ishani enjoys reading, writing, and watching Star Trek.

Amy Chen is currently a junior at duPont Manual High School with a passion for mathematics and science. In middle school, she participated in the Mathcounts competition series, winning 1st place at the Chapter competition and 2nd place at State. Amy participated in KAAC and received many awards in the math and science subjects. She also received a 36 on the ACT. In her freshman year, Amy took the AMC 10 competition and qualified for the AIME. She also participated in Science Olympiad, placing 1st in each of her events at the State competition and 5th in one of her events at the 2021 National competition. Outside of academics, Amy enjoys doing photography, coding, and writing stories.

Yolanda Xie is a junior at duPont Manual High School. She participated in Mathcounts and Quick Recall for all three years of middle school. In 7th grade, she got a composite score of 34 on the ACT, qualifying for the Duke Tip Grand Recognition Ceremony in all subject areas. In previous years she has received numerous awards in Math Written Assessment. Yolanda is a two-time USABO semifinalist and also participates in Science Olympiad, placing 1st and 7th in her events at nationals. In her free time, she plays the piano and practices archery.

Kayoung Kim is a junior at duPont Manual High School. She participated in Mathcounts all three years of middle school, advancing to the state level. She also participated in Quick Recall, earning awards in math and language arts. In high school, she participated in Science Fair with a project in math, earning 2nd place at regionals and 3rd at state. She also placed 3rd overall in the Kentucky Junior Academy of Science competition and attended the national conference in February of 2022. She has continued math-related projects for Science Fair and has had similar positive outcomes. She also participates in Science Olympiad and has attended nationals every year. In her free time, she enjoys playing the flute, was 1st chair All-Country all three years of middle school, and was part of the top All-State band in both the 2020 - 2021 and 2021 - 2022 school years.

Ruth is a junior at duPont Manual. She has participated in a wide variety of extracurricular activities including winning first place speaker at debate tournaments and being a Technovation semifinalist. Over the summer before her junior year, she participated in a tech internship, adding to her knowledge in Java. She skipped Precalculus and Calc A, allowing her to advance straight to AP Calculus BC in her junior year of high school. In her free time, she likes to read, learn french, play the violin/viola, and paint.
